Orientation Day

The day started with me getting on the Tram to my new school, Simonds Catholic College. This will be my transport to and fro school next year. It took me about 30min to get there and when I got there I was greted by my new School Principle and said goodbye to my Dad.  I quickly got to the meeting room where most of next year’s year 7 where seated. We had a quick briefing on our expectations and what next year’s going to be like.

After that the group was split up into our home groups for next year and found out my teacher. My teacher was Miss Fisher, she is a good teacher. Next the class was given with questions to ask fellow classmates. It was to find out more about each other. I didn’t do to good but someone else managed to fill it out.

Next I Recess where it was provided. We got to have Jam Doughnuts which was very tasty. After Recess I maths with Miss ?(I forgot her name). We talked about time tables and talked about bit of homework to do over the holidays. We also did a quick 42 question times table sheet. We had 60 seconds to do it and I answered  about 20 of them in that time.

The next session was Science with our home room teacher. I did a sheet in what we new about science. I did very well because of what I learnt this year. Next the class did an experiment on if Coke or Diet Coke would float on water. The Diet Coke sort of floated because it weighed 1.1 g/cm3. For something to float on water it has to weigh 1 g/cm3 or less. We got to make paper aeroplanes and test them on how far they flew. Mine was a bit of a fail.

Next I had lunch of Hot Dog and Soft Drink. It was very good and satisfied me. I played Downball with some people. I started to get to know two people called Max and Rupen. By the end of Lunch I got to know some people better. This was a very Lunch Time.

Next I did drama with Ms ? (I can’t remember her name either). We played many fun games that where interesting. One of those games I played was by trying to roll a tennis ball through each other legs. You could try to stop it. Anther game I played was where you would act like something and then the teacher would call out a number and you would have to get into a group of that number.

For the last session I had P.E with Mr Veal our Year 7 coordinator. We did best to 3 trying to stand on each others toes. We played Number Soccer and Dodgeball. I did OK in these but I did worse in soccer. Orientation Day ended in me drawing in a shield to tell something about me. When the bell went, I went home on the tram and that was it.

Education Week: Scientists Do Amazing Things

Yesterday I and my class went to GTAC for education week, because the theme is Scientists Do Amazing Things. The scientists we worked with where Jacinta,  Maria, Sam, etc. We did experiments on changing states of objects like butter, dry ice and the inside liquid of a kernel. then we did more experiments on how water is cleaned. We did this by splitting up into groups and working on those experiments. We also missed out on catching the cool tram. ):

Things I remember are that dry ice goes from a solid to a gas in a process called sublimation skipping the melting and evaporation stages. That the kernel only a popcorn only explodes or pops because it has water in it and when it is turned into gas it and the gas wants to get out and it does by turning the insides of the kernel inside out. That Liquid Nitrogen temperature is -196 degrees Celsius and when you put a balloon in it, the gas particles in the balloon will bunch up together because it’s so cold and when you take it out it will reinflate again because the particles have warmed up again. That we use flocculate and chlorine to clean our water, the flocculate attracts the dirt particles making them bigger and the chlorine kills the bacteria in the, or you can use UV rays to kill the bacteria to.

Understandings I now have is that science is really fun to do and it manipulates your mind to think about what’s happening in the experiment and what’s happening around you. I now understand what they clean water before they send it out to our taps or back into our water ways. I understand how algae blooms can really affect the water in Port Phillip Bay and many over places all over the world. I understand how the get rid of the oil slits in the ocean when there’s an oil spill. I understand that the bacteria or acid that helps us digest is not good for us if it reaches other places.

Questions I still have are what are the bacteria or acid that help us digest food called? What the type of algae the usually bloom in Port Phillip Bay?

2014 Swimming carnival

The start of today was no ordinary day it was the start of the great swimming carnival of 2014 which was yet to be start but when it did the competition levels went up and people would start winning. First we walked down to the pool and got ready for what was about towels where put down, sunscreen was put on and people prepared for the first epic event of the day. I was cheering on as the competitors raced down the pool at 100mp/h and the finish line was close there was to be only one winner. The winner got the first place ribbon and was proud of himself.

As the day stretched on me and Angus invented a new type of cricket thongkit and we played it all day hitting six and fours and if you hit it into the pool on the full you will get 100 runs (mainly because it was so hard). We went to the canteen. I got a sausage roll and orange Powerade, and Angus got a pie and orange Powerade.

Then the moment of truth happened me and the relay team won the paddleboard relay! Then relay team came third in the wading race it was still good because we still gained points for our team then free time and we had so much fun playing thongkit in the pool we also went to the deep and had some more fun playing around. Then we had to go back to school to announce which house had won the 2014 swimming carnival. In the end Banks (I’m in Lawson) won the swimming carnival and Lawson (My team) came second
